The project began with The Metal Opera (2001) and The Metal Opera (2002) and has thus spent a few decades releasing albums all with a revolving cast of collaborators including vocalists from Helloween, Blind Guardian, Virgin Steele, Stratovarius, and Queensrÿche. Sometimes this theme has a story, other times it is a general suggestion of narrative. It may not be as cool as some of the other black and death metal I enjoy but I am having the time of my life.įor those of you who are confused or may not be familiar with Avantasia, it is a collaborative project lead by Edguy vocalist Tobias Sammet with an ensemble cast of power and hard rock musicians for a feature length album usually revolving around a theme. Just the fact that the opening track “Ghost in the Moon” has shades of Bat Out Of Hell era Meat Loaf in its sound is only indication that this album is going places that may not be for everyone but for those who are ready, it is going to be a wild ride.

Compared to some of the other music which catches my interest, Avantasia is incredibly wholesome and reminds me of the best times I have had with other bombastic heavy metal and hard rock. This will be number 3 which means I have spent 6 years embraced in the loving arms of this power metal ensemble. And while the journey ends on a seeming tanget, with the inexplicable inclusion of a cover of Michael Sombello’s “Maniac” from the Flashdance Soundtrack, it’s still a journey worth taking. The listener will experience a musical journey that is most certainly worth taking. Sascha Path provides guitar, bass, and keys, with Michael Rodenburg providing additional keys and orchestration, and Felix Bonke supplying drums, Moonglow is truly a Melodic Hard Rock opera concept album that is worth listening to.

“Invincible” features Tate, and is definitely one of the standout tracks.

The 11 songs are epic in scope, well produced, and very enjoyable to listen to. Moonglow also introduces new collaborators Hansi Kürsch of Blind Guardian, Kreator’s Mille Petrozza and Blackmore’s Night front woman Candice Night. For Moonglow, Sammet enlisted original Queensrÿche lead singer Geoff Tate, Pretty Maids front man Ronnie Atkins, Michael Kiske of Helloween, Jørn Lande of Masterplan, Eric Martin of Mr. Big, Saxon’s Biff Byford, and Twisted Sister front man Dee Snider. The brainchild of Edguy singer, songwriter, and producer Tobias Sammet, Avantasia has incorporated the talents of legends such as Alice Cooper, Klaus Meine and Rudolf Schenker of Scorpions, Bruce Kulick and Eric Singer of KISS, Eric Martin of Mr. Moonglow is the 8 th full length record by all-star rock opera conglomerate Avantasia.
